When the power goes out, your home internet often disappears within seconds even if your phone is fully charged. The modem is not the only reason: with a fiber connection, the optical network terminal, a separate router, mesh nodes, and sometimes an Ethernet switch also need power. Powering the devices in your home also does not guarantee that the provider’s infrastructure in your building or on your street will keep working. A sound plan identifies the necessary devices, measures consumption, selects a safe battery, and tests the mobile network as an independent backup.

Map the connection chain

Trace the internet cable starting at the wall. If you use fiber, list the optical network terminal, its adapter, and the router. With a cable or DSL connection, the modem and router may be combined in one box. You may not need to keep every node in a mesh system running; during an outage, the primary node alone may provide enough coverage for a small part of the home.

If your home phone works over the internet, its base station or adapter should also be included in the plan. During a power outage, internet-based phone service depends on both the network equipment in your home and the power available to the provider’s infrastructure. Do not base your emergency communication plan solely on calls that rely on fixed internet service.

Record the voltage and amperage shown on each adapter’s label. Multiplying these two values gives a rough upper limit for the maximum wattage the adapter can supply; the device’s continuous consumption may be lower. For a more accurate result, use a plug-in power meter to observe consumption during normal use.

Do not compare battery capacity using only the advertised milliamp-hour rating. Output conversion losses, the battery management system, aging, and temperature all affect runtime. Multiply the measured total wattage by the desired number of hours to estimate the required watt-hour capacity, and leave a safety margin for conversion losses.

Choose the right type of backup power

DC mini UPS units designed for modems and routers can operate efficiently when used with the correct voltage and connector. The wrong voltage or polarity, however, can damage network equipment. If you use multiple outputs, verify the voltage, connector size, and total current limit of each one separately.

A standard AC UPS supports a broader range of devices and can switch over automatically when the power fails, but conversion losses at low loads, fan noise, or warning tones may occur. A portable power station can provide a longer runtime. However, the manufacturer must explicitly support continuous connection to an outlet, uninterrupted switchover, and battery protection for that usage. Not every power station behaves like a conventional UPS.

Research the product’s overcurrent, short-circuit, temperature, and overcharge protections. Favor products that provide clear documentation of recognized safety testing and specify battery replacement and warranty terms. Do not place the power source in an enclosed, hot cabinet, in direct sunlight, or near easily ignited materials. Do not block its ventilation openings.

The U.S. Fire Administration recommends following the manufacturer’s instructions for lithium-ion batteries, using the proper charging equipment, and discontinuing use of batteries that show an odor, excessive heat, a change in color or shape, leakage, or unusual noises. Do not put a damaged product in household trash; follow local rules for collecting electronic waste and batteries.

Account for the limits of provider infrastructure

Even if the modem in your home remains operational, distribution equipment in the building or a street cabinet may lose power. You can ask your provider about the local infrastructure’s backup-power arrangements, but do not expect a guaranteed connection duration during widespread or prolonged outages. The FCC’s consumer guide also emphasizes that home backup power can keep communications service running, while actual availability depends on the type of service and the provider’s equipment.

Prepare your phone’s cellular data plan, personal hotspot, and method for checking data usage in advance. If two providers offer noticeably different coverage in your area, consider the cost of a backup SIM or eSIM. Remember that cell towers can also become congested during prolonged outages. When an emergency call is necessary, prioritize the phone’s standard calling function and instructions from local authorities over internet-based messaging apps.

Run a controlled outage drill

During the day, when no critical call is in progress, unplug the network devices from the wall and run them solely on backup power. Check that the optical network terminal and router remain online without restarting. Do not rely on seeing the Wi-Fi icon: open a real webpage, conduct a short video call, and monitor connection stability if possible.

Record the test’s start time, battery charge level, total load, and remaining capacity. Then disconnect the fixed internet cable and practice switching to the phone’s hotspot. Make sure family members can securely locate the backup network name and password.

Conduct a short switchover test every three months and a longer capacity test at least once a year. Keep the manufacturer’s information about battery lifespan, replacement procedures, and recycling. Add a charged light, offline maps, and printed emergency numbers to the outage plan. The goal is not to power the entire home for hours, but to maintain the essential communications link safely, measurably, and, where possible, through two separate connection methods.
