Why is eCall back in focus?
eCall is an in-vehicle system that can automatically connect to Europe’s 112 emergency call infrastructure when a serious traffic accident is detected. When vehicle sensors are triggered, it can transmit limited information needed for the response, such as location, direction of travel, and vehicle type, to the emergency call center. The driver or a passenger can also initiate a call manually using the vehicle’s SOS button.
The system now needs renewed scrutiny. A significant proportion of first-generation eCall hardware relies on 2G and 3G connections. As mobile operators shut down these older networks on different dates in different countries, the transition to next-generation eCall infrastructure operating over 4G and 5G continues. Research published by the European Commission in May 2026 states that approximately 64 million vehicles could lose eCall functionality unless coordinated action is taken. This possibility does not mean that every vehicle with older hardware will immediately lose connectivity; the risk varies by country, operator, and vehicle module.
1. Identify the type of system in the vehicle
Find the “eCall,” “112,” “SOS,” or “emergency call” sections in the owner’s manual. A red button in the overhead console alone does not prove that the vehicle has 112 eCall. In some vehicles, this button connects to the manufacturer’s paid roadside assistance service or a private call center.
Contact the manufacturer or an authorized service center using the vehicle identification number and request three details in writing: whether the vehicle has a regulation-compliant 112 eCall system, which mobile network generations the communication module supports, and whether a software update or service campaign has been issued for the vehicle.
In the European Union, the eCall requirement began applying to new vehicle types in the M1 and N1 classes on March 31, 2018. The phrase “new vehicle type” is important here. A car with a more recent initial registration date may be based on a vehicle type approved earlier. The target market for which an imported vehicle was manufactured can also affect the system’s availability.
2. Check the indicator lights
Observe the SOS system’s self-test when switching on the ignition. A continuously illuminated red light, a crossed-out communication symbol, or an emergency call system fault message on the instrument panel may require servicing. Because the precise meaning of the indicators varies by make and model, consult the owner’s manual rather than internet forums.
The system may contain a small backup battery so that it can operate if the vehicle’s main battery is disabled in a crash. A fault may be logged as this battery ages. During routine maintenance, ask about the battery’s service life and the module’s fault records.
Do not press the SOS button at random to test the system. A test call can unnecessarily occupy genuine emergency resources. Use the manufacturer-approved service diagnostics or official test procedure. If you initiate a call accidentally, do not hang up and leave the operator uncertain; clearly explain that there is no emergency.
3. Research network shutdowns by country
General reports that “2G and 3G are shutting down” are not sufficient for making a decision. Review the current schedules published by regulators and mobile operators in the countries where you frequently drive. Some countries may shut down 3G while keeping 2G available longer for emergency calls and machine-to-machine communication.
Then ask the manufacturer which networks the vehicle can connect to while roaming. If the module supports only legacy connectivity, ask whether a software update is sufficient, whether the hardware can be replaced, and how much it will cost. Be cautious about universal converters sold online. The eCall module is a type-approved safety system that works together with the antenna, SIM or eSIM, microphone, speaker, vehicle bus, and crash sensors.
4. Request documentation when buying a new vehicle
Do not settle for the seller simply saying that the vehicle “has eCall.” Have support for next-generation eCall or NG eCall, the countries where it is active, and whether it requires a subscription recorded in the purchase documentation. Distinguish the public 112 eCall system from the manufacturer’s concierge, remote vehicle management, and roadside assistance services. Even if the subscription to a private service ends, the status of the 112 function must be verified separately.
5. Make simple preparations before an accident
From the driver’s seat, learn where the SOS button is located and how to open its protective cover, but do not press it. Explain to family members who regularly use the vehicle how to initiate a manual call. In a used vehicle, remove the previous user’s manufacturer account and update the contact information for private assistance services.
eCall depends on cellular coverage; no mobile system can guarantee a connection in an area without coverage. Therefore, on a remote journey, do not use eCall as a substitute for route sharing, satellite communication, or another emergency plan. If an automatic call is not initiated after a crash and conditions are safe, call 112 by phone and report the road, kilometer marker, and direction of travel.
The right approach is neither to declare the vehicle unsafe immediately nor to assume that the system will work forever. Identifying the actual hardware using the vehicle identification number, comparing it with country-specific network schedules, and promptly addressing fault warnings increase the likelihood that eCall will remain useful when needed.
