How is Auracast different from a conventional Bluetooth connection?

Auracast uses the Bluetooth LE Audio infrastructure to let one audio source broadcast to many nearby receivers. Conventional Bluetooth use generally involves one-to-one pairing between a phone and headphones. With Auracast, however, a television, phone, or venue sound system can act as the transmitter; a phone or another compatible device can serve as the broadcast assistant; and headphones or hearing aids can act as receivers.

This structure supports scenarios ranging from listening to a muted airport television through your own headphones to having two people watch a movie on the same phone with separate headphones. However, a box labeled only “Bluetooth 5.x” does not prove Auracast support. The phone, operating system, and audio accessory must collectively support the required LE Audio functions.

Verify all three components before buying

First determine how you intend to use the feature: Will you start a broadcast or join an existing one? Some phone models can work as broadcast assistants without being able to broadcast their own audio. Headphones may support LE Audio without being Auracast receivers. Look for an explicit phrase such as “Auracast receiver,” “broadcast audio,” or “audio sharing” on the manufacturer’s technical specifications page.

For the phone, check the model number, operating system version, and regional software release together. Variants from the same product family sold in different countries may not receive the same feature at the same time. Also find out whether the headphones or hearing aids require current firmware. Review the Bluetooth SIG’s product and feature descriptions rather than relying only on a store listing’s title.

Steps for joining a broadcast

  1. Update the phone, headphones, and hearing aids, if applicable. Then connect the accessory to the phone through the standard Bluetooth settings.
  2. Look for an option named “Audio sharing,” “Find broadcast,” or something similar in the phone’s Quick Settings or Connected devices section. Menu names may vary by manufacturer.
  3. In a public place, verify the listed broadcast name against a screen at the venue or with a staff member. Do not select a similarly named broadcast just because it appears at the top of the list.
  4. If the venue provides a QR code, scan it with the operating system’s camera tool. If the code directs you to an unexpected website, do not open the link. On a compatible device, a genuine Auracast joining flow should display a step for selecting a listening option or broadcast.
  5. After selecting the broadcast, start at a low volume. Check that sound comes through both the left and right headphones, that latency is suitable for the intended use, and that personal volume controls work.

Google’s current Android help documentation explains that supported devices can use multiple LE Audio accessories, scan for public broadcasts, and check connected headphones with a test sound. However, the absence of these menus does not necessarily indicate a fault; the combination of phone and headphones may not support the required roles.

Protect your privacy when starting a personal broadcast

If you plan to share a movie or music with people nearby, do not include your real name, phone number, room number, or location in the broadcast name. For a broadcast that should be limited to invited participants, enable a password or the private broadcast option offered by the manufacturer. According to the Bluetooth SIG, Auracast broadcasts may be open or encrypted. An open broadcast can be discovered by compatible receivers within range.

Do not use an open broadcast to share private content such as conversations, voice messages, medical consultations, or business meetings. Run a quick test to see whether notification sounds are transmitted during the broadcast, and use Do Not Disturb mode if needed. When finished, do more than stop playback: turn off audio sharing and confirm that the broadcast indicator has disappeared.

How do you diagnose a failed connection?

Start by examining each part of the three-component compatibility chain separately. If the phone can see the broadcast but the headphones cannot join, check the accessory’s LE Audio/Auracast support and firmware. If the broadcast does not appear at all, move closer to the transmitter, turn Bluetooth off and back on, and try another compatible broadcast. If sound comes from only one earbud, place both earbuds in their charging case and reconnect them; their coordinated set information may not have been updated.

When dropouts occur in a crowded environment, do not interpret “unlimited receivers” as unlimited coverage or flawless audio. Walls, antenna placement, transmitter power, and radio congestion affect the actual range. When assessing the problem, test first from a fixed position and then gradually increase the distance.

Finally, do not immediately delete the conventional Bluetooth pairing. First run the phone’s test sound tool, try another media app, and turn the broadcast feature off and back on. If the problem persists, record the phone, headphone, and operating system versions and contact the manufacturer’s support channel with this information.
