What does Private Space do?
Android’s Private Space feature creates a second profile that separates your chosen apps and their local data from the main profile. When the space is locked, its apps are stopped and hidden from the launcher, the recent apps screen, system search, and some sharing interfaces. This can prevent banking, journal, private messaging, or document apps from being easily seen when you occasionally hand your phone to someone else.
Private Space is not, however, a completely invisible vault. According to Google’s documentation, its existence can be detected through ADB access, device logs, or certain apps. It therefore does not provide absolute privacy against forensic examination, administrator access, or a complete compromise of the device. Treat the feature as an additional layer of compartmentalization, not as a replacement for a strong screen lock and an up-to-date operating system.
Check compatibility first
Private Space generally requires Android 15 or later, although the manufacturer may have disabled the feature. The option may not appear on managed corporate devices, when the main profile contains a supervised account, while using a secondary user, or when the profile limit has been reached. Search for “Private Space” under Settings > Security & privacy. If the menu is absent, check the manufacturer’s support page instead of merely installing a similarly named third-party app; app locks offered under the same name do not provide the same operating-system-level isolation.
Before setup, decide which apps you will use inside it. Health tracking, alarm, smart home control, child tracking, or emergency notification apps that need to run continuously in the background are not suitable candidates. When the space is locked, apps may stop background tasks and generating notifications.
Set it up with a separate lock and account
Go to Settings > Security & privacy > Private Space and verify your identity with your current screen lock. Although the system allows you to use the device lock, choosing a different, hard-to-guess PIN or password provides stronger separation. Remember that using the same fingerprint is convenient, but does not create as clear a boundary against someone who knows the main lock as a separate PIN does.
To reduce unexpected data leaks, Google recommends using a separate Google Account in Private Space that has not been used on other devices or in the main profile. If you reuse your main account, synchronized photos, emails, contacts, calendar entries, browsing history, bookmarks, passwords, and app suggestions may also appear outside the space. If you create a separate account, store its recovery information securely and enable multi-factor authentication.
Reinstall apps from the store inside Private Space. Moving the shortcut of an app found in the main profile into the space does not automatically transfer its existing data. You must sign in again to each app and grant its permissions separately. Do not automatically accept camera, microphone, location, and file permissions simply because the app is trusted in the main profile.
Test the lock and visibility settings
The safest automatic-lock option is to lock Private Space whenever the device is locked. A five-minute delay may be convenient, but it leaves the content accessible if you briefly leave the phone unlocked. The “Only after device restarts” option is weak for day-to-day privacy. Even if you hide the space’s section in the launcher, accept that traces of its existence do not disappear completely.
After setup, run a realistic test: open the space, send a test notification, and inspect the recent apps screen and system search; then lock the space and repeat the same checks. Confirm that private content does not appear in the sharing menu, photo picker, or file interface. If you use a third-party launcher, test its behavior separately; some launchers may not fully support the feature.
Do not overlook VPN, file, and backup limitations
Google’s current help page states that apps in Private Space may bypass the device’s VPN. Even if you use an “Always-on VPN” or a setting that blocks connections without the VPN, do not assume that traffic from apps in the private profile is actually passing through the tunnel. Open your VPN provider’s test page in both the main profile and Private Space, then compare the displayed IP addresses. If sensitive use depends on the VPN, do not run the app until you have verified the result.
When adding a file, “Copy” leaves the original file in the main profile, while “Move” removes it from the main side after the transfer is complete. Other copies may nevertheless exist, such as a cloud-synchronized copy, message attachment, thumbnail, or previous backup. For a highly sensitive document, separately check the location of every copy.
On-device app data in Private Space cannot be restored from a standard device backup. Deleting the space, forgetting its lock, or resetting the phone may cause local data to be lost irreversibly. Make an encrypted, independent backup of important documents that are not synchronized to the cloud. The absence of a recovery mechanism is a security advantage, but it also poses a serious risk when users make mistakes.
Finally, before deleting the space, open each app inside it individually, export the necessary data, and verify the exported copy on another device. Then delete the space through its settings. This discipline turns the feature from a simple “app hiding” tool into a controlled system for compartmentalizing data.
