The same connector does not mean the same performance

The growing use of USB‑C in phones, tablets, headphones, and laptops makes it easier to charge multiple devices with a single adapter. The European Union’s common-charger rules also promote a common connector, compatible fast charging, and clearer consumer information for products within their scope. However, two USB‑C connections that look physically identical may have different power, data-transfer, and video capabilities.

EU common-charger requirements began applying to phones, tablets, and many portable devices covered by the rules on December 28, 2024. The application date for laptops was April 28, 2026. The rules also aim to let consumers buy eligible devices with or without a charging adapter. However, the presence of a USB‑C port does not mean that every charger will charge every device at its highest speed.

1. Find out how much power the device requires

Look for “input power,” “charging,” “USB PD,” or “Power Delivery” in the manufacturer’s specifications. Do not use only the wattage of the old adapter included in the box as your benchmark; the device may support different power profiles. Wattage is roughly voltage multiplied by current, but in a USB Power Delivery system, the charger and device electronically negotiate a suitable profile.

A reliable, standards-compliant charger with a high maximum output does not force that power into a phone. The device requests the amount it supports. Conversely, if the charger does not provide the profile the device needs, charging may slow down even though the connection is physically compatible.

New EU labels may separately show the minimum charging power required for the device to operate and the power needed to reach its fastest charging speed. A USB PD marking also indicates support for compatible fast charging. If this information is missing from a product page when shopping online, consult the manufacturer’s manual; do not rely solely on immeasurable marketing claims such as “super fast.”

2. Distinguish single-port power from total power

The 100 W or 140 W rating shown on a multiport charger is often the combined upper limit for all outputs. When a second or third device is connected, the charger may redistribute power. The laptop may then begin charging more slowly, or the connection may briefly disconnect and reconnect.

Find the manufacturer’s power-distribution table and check the combination of ports you plan to use. A product capable of supplying 100 W through one USB‑C output may allocate 65 W to a computer and 30 W to a phone when two outputs are used simultaneously. The distribution may change further with another port combination.

Identify the most demanding realistic scenario for your desk setup. If the phone and headphones will remain connected while the computer is working hard, check how much power the charger allocates to each device in that situation. Leaving some capacity above the devices’ total requirements can reduce constant operation at the upper limit and loss of charging performance under load.

3. Treat the cable as an active part of the chain

The charger alone does not determine charging speed. The USB‑C cable’s power capacity, electronic marker, length, and physical condition also affect the result. The USB Implementers Forum requires USB‑C-to-USB‑C cables in its compliance program to carry markings indicating a power capacity of 60 W or 240 W. Cables with high data speeds may also display their supported data capacity.

For a high-powered laptop, verify that the cable explicitly supports the required wattage. Do not use very thin, damaged, loose, or untraceable cables at high power. Stop using a cable if the connector becomes unusually hot, the cable appears sharply bent, or the connection cuts out when touched.

Charging capacity and data speed are not the same feature. A cable capable of carrying 240 W may have a low data speed, while a high-speed data cable may not support the charging power you expect. If you plan to use the same cable with an external drive or monitor, check its power, data, and video capabilities separately. Remember that certification marks can be copied; when possible, look up the product in the USB‑IF certified product database.

4. Match the fast-charging protocol

For maximum speed, some phones require particular profiles such as PPS or a manufacturer-specific protocol in addition to USB Power Delivery. Even if the charger’s total wattage is sufficient, the phone may charge safely but more slowly when the required profile is unavailable. “Compatible with all phones” does not mean maximum speed on every phone.

Compare the charger’s list of output profiles with the device manufacturer’s requirements. Measure actual charging time using a similar starting percentage, temperature, and level of screen use. It is normal for power to decrease as the battery fills. Intensive app use, a warm environment, and an active screen can also affect the measurement.

5. Check safety and purchasing details

Buy the charger from an identifiable manufacturer and a trusted seller. Its model number, input voltage, output profiles, and compliance information should be clear. An unusually low price, loose plug pins, spelling errors, or an unrealistic combination of power and size may be warning signs.

Remember that a travel adapter may only convert the plug shape and may not change the mains voltage. Compare the charger’s input range with the electrical system in the destination country. Do not cover the charger while it is in use or leave it under a bed. Mild warmth may be normal; a burning smell, crackling, discoloration, or heat intense enough to make the charger untouchable is not.

To make the right choice, first identify the device requiring the most power and the USB PD profiles it supports. Then check the power distribution of the ports that will be used simultaneously, the cable’s power capacity, and the product’s certification status. This lets you decide based on the entire charger-cable-device chain, not merely the large wattage printed on the box.
