When you encounter the label “HDMI 2.2 cable,” your first question should not be about the cable’s version number, but about how much bandwidth your video chain actually needs. HDMI 2.2 introduces innovations such as a maximum bandwidth of 96 Gbps, higher resolution and refresh-rate combinations, and the Latency Indication Protocol. However, not every HDMI 2.2-capable device is required to offer every new feature, and most existing televisions and gaming systems do not need an Ultra96 cable.

Ask about supported features instead of the version number

HDMI Licensing Administrator explicitly states that the version number alone should not be used to describe a product’s capabilities. HDMI 2.2 printed on a television’s box does not prove that every input operates at 96 Gbps, accepts every resolution, or provides every gaming feature. For the relevant input, separately verify the resolution, refresh rate, chroma sampling, bit depth, VRR, eARC, and maximum bandwidth in the manufacturer’s specifications.

The naming is clearer for cables: the certified category supporting up to 48 Gbps is called “Ultra High Speed HDMI Cable,” while the new category supporting up to 96 Gbps is called “Ultra96 HDMI Cable.” Under the HDMI organization’s rules, version numbers should not be used in cable marketing. You should therefore be wary of a product whose packaging says only “HDMI 2.2 cable” but lacks an official Ultra96 certification label.

When is Ultra96 really necessary?

An Ultra96 cable is the right choice if your source device or display explicitly supports the “Ultra96” feature and a 64, 80, or 96 Gbps connection exceeding 48 Gbps. HDMI’s official explanation calls for an Ultra96 cable to be used with products carrying this feature name. Modes such as 4K at 240 Hz with full chroma sampling, high bit depth, or future combinations involving 8K and higher resolutions may benefit from this capacity. Because some modes can also operate at lower link speeds through video compression, looking only at the resolution is not enough.

If your existing devices operate at up to 4K 120 Hz or 8K 60 Hz and use a connection of no more than 48 Gbps, a certified Ultra High Speed cable is generally the appropriate category. Replacing a working cable that carries the required video mode without errors will not improve image quality simply because a new standard has been released. For a digital connection, the claim that a more expensive cable produces more vivid colors is not a valid selection criterion. What matters is whether the cable carries the required signal accurately and reliably.

Perform a three-link compatibility check

The first link in the chain is the source device: examine the output capabilities of the computer graphics card, game console, media player, or AV receiver. The second link is the display: confirm that the correct input on the television or monitor supports the required bandwidth and video mode. On some models, not all HDMI inputs are equal. The third link is the cable: choose a certified product of the required category and a suitable length.

Check the certification label

Scan the code on the label with the official HDMI Cable Certification app and confirm that the model shown on the screen matches the product in your hand. A logo image pasted onto a product listing does not count as certification.

The official category name should also be printed on the cable jacket. Return any product with a damaged label, failed verification, or a brand and model result that does not match. Be especially skeptical of maximum-speed claims for very long, uncertified passive cables. If an active or optical solution is required over a long distance, also check the direction marking, power requirements, and the length specified in the certification.

Test the actual video mode after installation

After connecting the cable, select the target resolution and refresh rate in the source device’s settings. If the television has an enhanced, extended, or high-bandwidth HDMI input mode, enable it for the correct port. On a computer, check the refresh rate, color format, and bit depth in the operating system and graphics card control panel. Do not base your purchase solely on claims of future-proofing

If you plan to buy a source and display exceeding 48 Gbps soon, are running the cable through a wall, or are creating an installation that will be difficult to change later, a certified Ultra96 cable may be a sensible precaution. However, if the hardware you use today is limited to 48 Gbps and the cable is easy to replace, there is no need to pay a premium for an uncertain future.

For the final decision, write down four details: the source’s maximum output, the display input’s maximum capacity, the video mode you will use, and the cable length. The weakest link on this list determines what you need.
