The Android Earthquake Alerts System can use sensor data from compatible phones to detect an earthquake and notify users who may be affected before, during, or shortly after the shaking. Turkey is among the supported countries. However, the system is not a flawless earthquake prediction tool: it cannot detect every event, and shaking may begin before the alert reaches you. Phone notifications should therefore be treated as an additional layer that complements official warnings and personal disaster preparedness.

Check the system requirements first

Check your phone’s Android version, security patch date, and Google Play system update. Menu names may vary by manufacturer. Searching for “Earthquake alerts” in the Settings app is usually the quickest option. According to Google’s current help page, Wi-Fi or mobile data must be enabled for alerts to be delivered.

Turning location off completely or disabling Google Location Accuracy may affect how the system works. The system uses approximate location to determine which devices should receive an alert. Google states that this information is not used to identify a specific user. Even so, you should read the explanation of how data is used and make an informed choice.

Enable earthquake alerts

In Settings, go to **Safety & emergency > Earthquake alerts**. If that section is unavailable, look under **Location > Advanced > Earthquake alerts**, or use the Settings search function. After enabling the switch, confirm that Wi-Fi or mobile data is turned on.

While you are there, also review **Notifications > Wireless emergency alerts**. Earthquake Alerts and wireless emergency notifications sent by public authorities are not the same thing. Android gives official wireless emergency messages higher display priority. Do not assume that enabling one automatically enables the other.

Check your manufacturer’s support page to learn how battery saver, data saver, and Do Not Disturb settings affect emergency notifications. It is useful to become familiar with the alert sound in a quiet environment, but do not install third-party “test alarm” APKs found online.

Add disaster information to your phone

Add your medical information and emergency contacts in the Personal Safety app or your manufacturer’s equivalent. Be sure to check which information is visible on the lock screen. Blood type, allergies, and critical medications may help emergency responders, while a home address, identification number, or unnecessary details can create a privacy risk if the phone is lost.

Learn the Emergency SOS shortcut and, if available, use the system’s demonstration or rehearsal screen without accidentally placing a call. Actions such as repeatedly pressing the power button may have different results depending on the model. Perform the same check separately on every family member’s phone; do not rely on one person’s device.

Decide in advance what to do when an alert arrives

Do not delay taking safe action to read the notification screen at length. Follow the official disaster instructions applicable where you are; heading for stairs, elevators, or balconies during shaking can be dangerous. The alert may show an estimated magnitude or expected shaking level, but remember that these are estimates.

After the shaking, using text messages instead of occupying the phone with unnecessary videos and calls may help reduce network load. Stay away from damaged buildings, allow for the possibility of aftershocks, and follow announcements from authorized agencies such as AFAD. Do not spread unverified claims about magnitude, new earthquakes, or tsunamis on social media.

Conduct a safe tabletop drill

Check the settings instead of trying to trigger a real alarm. Gather family members in the same room and compare the status of earthquake alerts, wireless emergency alerts, location, and data connectivity on each phone. Confirm that every device has sufficient charge, the power bank works, and emergency contacts are current.

Then discuss this scenario: When an alert arrives at home, work, or school, what will the first safe action be? Where will everyone meet after the shaking stops? If the network is unavailable, who will receive a message, and when? Write the plan down as well. A phone battery can run out, the device can be damaged, or an alert may not arrive.

How should you assess a missing alert?

If you feel an earthquake but receive no notification, that does not necessarily mean the setting is faulty. Google explicitly states that some earthquakes may not be detected and that magnitude and intensity estimates may be inaccurate. Your location, the expected level of shaking, your internet connection, and the time the alert was generated can all affect the outcome.

After the event, check that the settings are still enabled, the connection works, and Google Play services are up to date. If the issue persists, contact your phone manufacturer’s support channel with nonpersonal technical details such as the model, Android version, and approximate time of the event. Do not try to take a screenshot of the notification during an earthquake; focus on physical safety first.

The value of phone-based early warning may be measured in seconds, but advance decisions are what make those seconds useful.
