Protecting privacy on the web involves more than simply deleting cookies. Sites can combine signals such as screen size, time zone, fonts, graphics hardware, and browser settings to make a device recognizable. Mullvad Browser’s core promise is to place users within a larger crowd of similar-looking users instead of giving each person unique settings. Developed by the Tor Project and Mullvad VPN, this free and open-source browser therefore runs counter to the familiar “customize it however you like” approach.

First impression: Firefox feels familiar, but the rules are different

The Firefox-based interface feels familiar; tabs, bookmarks, and downloads are where you expect them to be. Within a few minutes, however, it becomes clear that this is no ordinary Firefox. The browser makes private browsing its default approach, limits the persistence of site data between sessions, and does not offer Firefox Sync. The built-in password manager is disabled, leaving users who want to remain signed in at odds with the browser’s design goals.

The empty space that sometimes appears around the window is not a rendering error. A technique known as “letterboxing” standardizes window dimensions, making it harder for screen size to become a distinctive part of a fingerprint. A time zone that does not match the user’s actual location and blurred rendering in some canvas-based images are also consequences of similar defenses. The protection is not invisible; it makes its presence clear in exchange for reduced convenience.

Strong tracker blocking, deliberately limited customization

uBlock Origin and NoScript are integrated into the browser’s defense model. uBlock Origin blocks third-party trackers, while NoScript restricts the web code that can run when the security level is raised. This ready-made setup is a major advantage for users who do not want to research numerous privacy settings one by one.

Although installing new extensions is technically possible, it is not recommended. Extensions and personalized settings can distinguish you from the standard Mullvad Browser crowd; in other words, a tool added for privacy could itself become a new fingerprinting component. Rebuilding the browser around all the habits of your personal Firefox profile reduces the product’s main benefit.

Mullvad says the browser does not collect user data, but the application does not operate entirely without external connections. It connects to outside services for updates, certificate and domain lists, Mullvad DoH, uBlock Origin filters, and updates to built-in components. This distinction matters: “not collecting telemetry” does not mean the software never communicates with any internet service.

The most important limitation: Mullvad Browser is not a VPN

The product’s name can easily create false expectations. The browser does not hide your IP address on its own and does not establish a VPN tunnel internally. A Mullvad subscription is not required either; users may choose another trustworthy VPN if they wish. Without a VPN, however, the internet service provider may learn about connection destinations, while visited sites can see the user’s real IP address. The browser’s defenses against fingerprinting and trackers do not eliminate this visibility at the network layer.

Using a VPN does not automatically provide anonymity either. The VPN operator becomes one of the trusted parties at the network layer of the connection; if you sign in to a site with your personal account, you disclose your identity directly. Mullvad Browser is neither a security suite that removes malware nor a magical shield that corrects poor user decisions.

Can it replace Tor Browser?

Although the two browsers have quite similar interfaces and approaches to reducing fingerprinting, their traffic takes different routes. Tor Browser sends the connection through the Tor network, while Mullvad Browser uses a regular internet connection or a VPN selected by the user. Tor Browser also provides circuit isolation, new identity creation, onion services, and built-in censorship-circumvention flows. Mullvad Browser does not include these features.

As a result, Tor Browser may be more appropriate for high-risk research, separating identity at the network level, or accessing onion services. Mullvad Browser strikes a more practical balance for people who want to reduce tracking by advertising technologies on the everyday web, use a separate fingerprint-resistant profile, and avoid the speed or site-compatibility issues that the Tor network can introduce.

Where does it struggle in everyday use?

Nonpersistent sessions can require users to sign in repeatedly to email, shopping, and workplace applications. Some sites may not work fully under strict blocking; raising the security level can break video players or interactive components. The absence of Firefox Sync is a clear loss for users who synchronize bookmarks and open tabs with their phones. There is no mobile version, either.

The most sensible approach may be to keep Mullvad Browser separate for sensitive research and tracking-free browsing rather than making it your only browser. Avoiding the combination of research that should remain anonymous with a normal profile containing banking, shopping, and personal accounts in the same session creates a clearer behavioral boundary than technical protection alone.

Verdict

Mullvad Browser stands out for being free, its open-source foundation, the Tor Project’s browser expertise, and its strong defaults out of the box. Its greatest achievement is not giving users hundreds of privacy settings, but reducing variation in settings to create similar profiles. That same characteristic makes it tiring for people who expect persistent sign-ins, cross-device synchronization, and extensive personalization.

It is a strong option for desktop users who want to reduce fingerprinting and are willing to change their browsing habits. It is not, however, an “install it and become invisible” product: hiding the IP address requires a separate, trustworthy network solution; signing in to personal accounts reveals identity; and Tor-specific anonymity features are not included. In short, Mullvad Browser is an effective privacy tool, but its value emerges only when the threat model is defined correctly and its limitations are accepted.
