Robot vacuums are no longer simple devices that move randomly across the floor. Some models can create a detailed map of a home using lidar, cameras, microphones, obstacle-recognition software, and remote-viewing features. Although this data is useful for cleaning, it can reveal room layouts, patterns of occupancy, and, in some cases, images. That is why suction power and battery life should not be the only considerations when choosing a model.
Understand the data flow before buying
A product page that says “AI-powered obstacle recognition” does not explain where images are processed. For a model with a camera, consult the manufacturer’s privacy notice to determine whether images are analyzed only on the device, sent to the cloud, or eligible for inclusion in error reports. If live camera viewing is available, the ability to disable it completely, the use of two-factor authentication for access, and an account session history are important advantages.
Ask whether maps are stored on the device, on the phone, or on the manufacturer’s servers. Look for options to export maps, delete them individually, and remove all copies when the account is closed. A manufacturer’s failure to state clearly how long it will provide security updates creates serious uncertainty for a long-lived household device. NIST’s consumer IoT approach likewise recommends evaluating capabilities such as updates, access control, data management, and secure resetting across the product as a whole.
Use the least privilege during setup
Do not automatically accept every permission when the robot’s app requests access to your location, microphone, photos, or nearby devices. Read why each permission is needed and at which stage of setup. Revoke a temporary permission used only to add the device once that process is complete. If the app wants access to your contacts or entire photo library merely to start basic cleaning, deny the request.
Do not use the manufacturer’s default password. Give the account a unique password and enable two-factor authentication if supported. Connect the robot to an up-to-date network protected by WPA2 or WPA3. If your router allows it, creating a separate guest or device network for IoT devices makes it harder for a compromised robot to reach computers and network storage directly. A separate network is not sufficient on its own, however; keep both the router software and the robot’s firmware up to date.
Create private areas on the map
During the initial mapping run, remove identity documents, medication labels, children’s photos, and similar sensitive items. Define no-go zones for bedrooms, work areas, or children’s rooms that a camera-equipped robot should not enter. Closing a physical door provides additional protection if the virtual boundary in the app is accidentally deleted. If you do not need the remote camera, leave it disabled; turn it on only when needed and disable it again afterward.
Regularly review home-sharing access in the app. Access granted to a former housemate, cleaner, or family member should not remain in place indefinitely. Where possible, grant permission only to operate the robot rather than administrator privileges. If you notice an unusual session, an unexpected map change, or a camera that activates by itself, disconnect the robot from the network, change the account password from a clean device, and contact the manufacturer through its security channel.
Reset the device before servicing or selling it
Emptying the bin before sending the robot for service does not erase its data. First delete maps and recordings from the app, remove device sharing, unlink the robot from the account, and follow the manufacturer’s factory-reset procedure. Then confirm that the device and old maps no longer appear in the app. When selling or donating it, verifying that the new owner can set it up with their own account is a practical way to confirm that the reset is complete.
It may not be possible to use every robot vacuum model entirely offline. The right goal is to share only the minimum data needed for the required function and consciously manage optional features such as the camera, cloud services, and remote access.
