Treat satellite connectivity as a backup plan
Emergency communication by satellite is not an unlimited coverage solution that allows your phone to work normally everywhere. This feature is designed to exchange brief information on supported devices and in supported regions when cellular service and Wi-Fi are unavailable. Establishing a connection depends on a clear view of the sky, the terrain, weather conditions, the device’s orientation, and whether the service is active in the country where you are located. Before setting out on a hike, camping trip, boat journey, or long drive, do not settle for saying, “My phone supports it”; test the entire chain.
First, verify the device model, operating system version, and country support on the manufacturer’s current webpage. Apple limits its satellite features to supported iPhone models and certain markets; messaging, Emergency SOS, location sharing, and roadside assistance may not be available in the same countries. Google also lists supported models and countries separately for its Pixel Satellite SOS service. If the phone was purchased in another country, the hardware’s sales region may also affect availability. Being in Turkey does not mean a feature you saw promoted abroad is automatically enabled. If you cannot see the feature in the Settings menu, do not assume a third-party app can reliably “enable” it.
Information to prepare before your trip
Complete operating system and security updates while connected to Wi-Fi. Check the status of your mobile service because an active SIM or eSIM may be required in some cases. Keep your name, important medical information, allergies, and emergency contacts current in the phone’s Health, Safety, or Emergency section. Include only information necessary for emergency responders in medical data visible from the lock screen; do not add details unrelated to your everyday care.
Tell your emergency contacts about your plan in advance. Create a brief plan covering your route, expected return time, vehicle information, and whom they should call if you are delayed. Explain that a satellite message may not arrive immediately and does not provide uninterrupted communication like a phone call. Agree on the kind of message you will send so the recipient does not mistake an unfamiliar location link for a scam.
If the manufacturer provides a demo, try it in a safe place. Apple’s demo teaches you how to point the phone toward a satellite without initiating a real emergency call. On Pixel devices, the Satellite SOS demo is also reported to be available through the Safety & emergency section in Settings. Cellular connectivity may be temporarily disabled during the demo; read the on-screen explanations and do not send a test message to 112 when there is no genuine emergency.
The correct sequence when you need a connection
In a real emergency, try a regular emergency call first. Even if your own carrier has no signal, another available network may carry the emergency call. If the call does not go through and the device displays a satellite option, move to an open area. Dense foliage, high rock formations, narrow valleys, and buildings can obstruct the view of the satellite. Do not expose yourself to a greater danger, such as a cliff, traffic, or severe weather, while searching for a signal.
Hold the phone in a normal-use position and follow the directional arrows on the screen. Instead of unnecessarily long sentences, clearly report the type of incident, number of injured people, location, and urgent need. If the system presents a questionnaire, select the correct options; some technical details, such as battery level and elevation, may be shared automatically. After the message is sent, remain in an open area if possible to maintain the connection. Because a response may be delayed, do not turn off the phone immediately or leave the app before the system tells you to end the session.
Do not confuse family messaging over satellite with communication with emergency services. For example, Apple explicitly states that the regular Messages via satellite feature should not be used during an emergency and that Emergency SOS via satellite should be used instead. Google likewise says Satellite SOS is intended for emergencies when no other means of communication is available. Regular messaging is not a substitute for an emergency response center.
Battery and a second backup plan
Fully charge the phone before departure and carry a power bank with suitable capacity and a sturdy cable. In cold weather, keeping the phone close to your body in a dry pocket may reduce battery drain. Taking photos continuously, using the screen at maximum brightness, and allowing the phone to search constantly for a network in an area without coverage will consume power quickly. Enable low power mode when necessary, but do not test settings that could affect satellite functionality for the first time during the trip.
An offline map, paper route, whistle, flashlight, and basic first-aid supplies remain essential. On long, high-risk routes, a personal locator beacon or satellite communication device may be more appropriate than a consumer phone. The phone’s satellite feature does not replace route planning, checking the weather, or leaving an expected return time with someone you trust.
Keep your final checklist short: supported device and country, current software, active mobile service, correct emergency contacts, completed demo, full battery, downloaded offline map, and route shared with people close to you. Because the feature’s conditions may change, check the manufacturer’s webpage again before every significant trip.
