Why does the label cover more than electricity consumption?
The energy label introduced for smartphones and tablets placed on the European Union market from June 20, 2025, provides a broader purchasing overview than the label on a refrigerator. In addition to energy efficiency, it shows runtime on a single charge, battery cycle life, resistance to repeated drops, protection against dust and water, and the repairability class. This label may not be mandatory on every device sold in Türkiye, but when buying a model also offered in the European market, you may find the same data on the manufacturer’s product page or in its EPREL record.
Do not reduce the label to a single letter. A highly efficient phone that is difficult to repair can become an expensive choice after a few years because of a broken screen or worn battery. By contrast, a device with a slightly lower energy class, a long battery cycle life, and high repairability may offer a lower total cost of ownership.
What does the energy class at the top measure?
The A-to-G scale is based on the relationship between the device’s battery endurance in a defined usage scenario and the battery’s energy capacity. Class A identifies models that use energy more efficiently within the same testing framework. However, this letter does not necessarily mean that the phone has the longest runtime on the market. A device with a large battery may run for a long time while receiving a lower efficiency class, whereas an efficient model with a small battery may need charging sooner depending on how you use it each day.
For this reason, also check the “battery endurance per cycle” value shown in hours and minutes next to the energy class. These values make comparisons easier by using a standardized laboratory scenario, but intensive gaming, weak cellular reception, high screen brightness, camera use, and temperature can alter actual runtime. When choosing between two candidates, compare the class first and then their stated runtime.
How should the battery cycle count be interpreted?
The cycle value beside the battery icon indicates the number of full charge-discharge cycles the battery can withstand before its usable capacity falls below 80 percent of its initial rated capacity. A cycle does not necessarily mean draining the phone from 100 percent to zero in one go; using a total of 100 percent of the battery over two days can also amount to approximately one cycle.
A high cycle count is a strong sign of longevity, but it is not enough on its own. Also ask about the cost of battery replacement, authorized and independent repair options, spare-part availability, and how water resistance will be verified after the procedure. Do not settle for a seller merely saying that the phone has “battery health protection”; request the tested cycle value on the label or the EPREL product information sheet.
What do the drop class and IP rating not guarantee?
The repeated free-fall reliability class is determined by how many drops a device completes without malfunctioning in a defined test. Under the regulation, Class A corresponds to at least 270 drops for non-foldable smartphones, Class B to 180–269 drops, and Class C to 90–179 drops. This result does not guarantee that the screen will survive a single hard fall onto a particular surface at a particular angle. A case, screen protector, and the device’s geometry still affect everyday risk.
The IP code is likewise a laboratory indicator with defined limits. A controlled freshwater test does not automatically provide assurance against seawater, chlorinated pools, hot showers, pressurized water, or a seal previously damaged by an impact. Read the warranty terms separately to determine the extent of coverage for liquid damage.
Verify the repairability class on the details page
The A-to-E repairability class combines subcriteria such as disassembly depth, fasteners, required tools, spare parts, the duration of software updates, and repair information. Two phones may receive the same class even though one achieves it through easy battery replacement and the other through longer software support. Scan the QR code on the label to open the EPREL product page and check that the model code matches the device in the store.
Before buying, follow this practical sequence: Record the full model code; verify that the QR code leads to the official EPREL domain; note the battery cycle count and single-charge runtime; compare the repairability and drop classes; find the manufacturer’s written end dates for security and operating system updates; and learn the cost of battery and screen replacements. Base the final decision not only on the camera or processor but also on how many years you plan to use the phone.
Final check
The label is not a certificate of perfection but a comparison tool based on a consistent measurement method. Warranty coverage, the service network, part prices, and local software support in Türkiye should be evaluated separately from the label. If the letter in the store listing does not match the official record, rely on the official product information sheet identified by the model code rather than on a screenshot. This allows you to test polished marketing claims against measurable battery, durability, and repair data.
